Topic122: People should never be satisfied with what they have and should always want something new and something different. Do you disagree? Use your own reason and specific example to support your idea.

That people should never be satisfied with what they have and always want something new and different seems to be a propensity inherent in human nature. We have all read in Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice that “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in a possession of large fortune must be want a wife.” This only testifies one aspect, which is also a necessary condition, of human existence.

On the most abstract level, the spirit of dissatisfaction constituted the very force that propelled human civilization forward in the course of human history. Stimulated by the thirst of knowledge from within and challenging with the hardness from without, man has evolved triumphantly from the most primitive to the most advanced and sophisticated. If it had contented our pristine ancestors to dwell in caves or lead a nomadic life, they should have remained some mere vagabond creatures, lurking in the unfriendly forests and in hostile wilderness, forever on the alert so as not to fall prey to ferocious predators. Consequently we can safely conclude that it is precisely man’s inquiring mind and aspiring nature distinguish himself from other animals.

In the modern world, the insatiable desire has given raise to the most spectacular development of science and technology. We know that, with all the material we accumulated, we can live a possible, even a well-to-do life. However, we are fully aware that life of this kind is not the best. Therefore, we travel into the unknown depths of universe to explore its mysteries and we undertake perilous expedition on South Pole under the hope of discovering alternative energy to compensate those which we are already have but which are depleting at an alarming rate. Every single advance in science and technology is the result of mankind’s incessant quest for the new, the different, and the better.

Finally, on the turn of century has witnessed a sustained proliferation of “isms”, both in art and in literature, such as impressionism, expressionism, symbolism, cubism, fauvism, surrealism, structuralism and the like. Why? The reason is simple. This flourishing is a direct response to people’s dissatisfaction with hackneyed and stereotyped model of expression, which expressiveness has been worn away by centuries of overuse. Appreciating classical masterpieces only, say, Mona Lisa by Da Vinci, is a dull job. By contrast, Picasso, the cubist has expressed a profound truth in Guernica with the refreshingly avant-grade freshness and originality. The Existing conditions are always transcended by the new and the different.

Admittedly, there are possible exceptions to this general rule of dissatisfaction. An ancient Chinese saying that “those who are constantly feel satisfied tend to be happy” is quite illustrative in this respect. But I would rather interpret it as implying that people’s sense of happy and satisfied results from what they have achieved, including what is new and what is different. After all, human are by no means the jackdaw in Aesop’s fable who could afford to indulge complacently but vainly in singing and dancing without knowing where his next meal would come form.

Question 39 to 43: Listen to a part of geology class.

Look at our geographical map, and you will see the middle third of North American continent, on the Rocky Mountain almost to the Mississippi River----- is pretty flat. This is the great plain. This kind of area sometimes called a prairie, sometimes called a steppe------ S-T-E-P-P-E. The defining features are level terrain, dry climate, and an absence of trees. The great plains are actually the former bed of the shallow inland sea. Over millions years, sediment left by glaciers, water and winds, smoothed out the dry sea bed.

As I said, the Great plains are bordered on the west on the Rocky Mountain. It is really the rocky that are responsible for formation of the grass land. The mountain is so high that they block the heavy moist air traveling eastward from the Pacific Ocean. Lighter, dryer air passes the mountain. Until people intervened with irrigation and farm, only grass can grow in this dry, windy plain. In fact, we can divide the Great Plain into 3 zones. In the west, where is driest and windiest, the grass is very short. In the eastern zone, there is more rain and the grass grows as 360 centimeters. In the middle third, there is a mix of grass species that grow to an intermediate height.

Border n.
